$1,757,000 in funding awards will help increase access to Substance Abuse and Mental Health services to meet the opioid epidemic in seven states: Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, California, Iowa, Alaska, and Indiana. Awards are $175,700 each. The purpose of this grant program is to support existing Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) clinics to fight the opioid epidemic by:  improving access to treatment and recovery services; targeting use of overdose-reversing drugs; and advancing better practices for pain management.

FQHCs now represent the largest primary practice in the United States. In 2016 they served more than 25.8 million patients with over 104 million patient visits at over 13,000 service sites with a combined staffing of over 207,000 health care professionals. FQHCs now provide primary care to one in thirteen adults and one in ten children living in the United States.

HHS is committed to ensuring more people across the country have access to the quality patient-centered care they deserve. Health centers are key partners in improving access to quality, affordable primary health care services for persons in high risk populations. HHS awarded more than $200 million to 1,178 health centers and 13 rural health organizations to support expansion and integration of mental health and substance abuse services. These services focus on the treatment, prevention and awareness of opioid abuse in the primary care setting by increasing personnel, leveraging health information technology, and providing training.
